Why worship Lakshmi on Diwali?
Hindus celebrate their festivals on the basis of the planetary positions of the Sun and the Moon. They are the most powerful planets which when placed favourably influence the person inconsiderably.
The Sun represents our soul and the Moon is capable of conferring great mental power.
Their auspicious presence and positioning create certain other combinations which confer favourable moments/hours to celebrate festivals.
One such esteemed festival is Diwali, the day when both Sun and Moon are placed in the same sign ie Libra, collaborating the most auspicious conjugation resulting in Amavasya, the night when the moon wanes off and total darkness sets in, calming down the frivolous mind which is totally governed by the moon. The more serene the mind becomes the more Shri Laxmi Pooja becomes intense and rewarding.
It is stated in Durgasaptshati that when the whole creation was engulfed in the shrouding darkness of Amvasaya, there emerged 18 armed Mahalxmi – the brilliant, glowing, luminous, divine light, enabling the whole evolutionary process to boom and develop.
Astrologically speaking, the planetary position plays an important role when the Diwali night falls in. The Sun and the Moon are placed in the same zodiac ie Libra, which is a zodiac for Surya – the Sun. The sign Libra belongs to Venus – planet known for bestowing wealth, riches, opulence and grandeur. The same is the case with goddess Laxmi – the deity of riches, prosperity, wealth and fortune. Such two combinations make the day auspicious to adore Laxmiji on Diwali night.
Secondly, the Sun – a panchamesh (the Lord of the fifth house) and the Moon – a chaturthesh (the Lord of the 4th house) when stationed in seventh house (whose sign Libra and the Lord is Venus) together forms an auspicious Yog called Laxmi Yog – the most opportune time for revering goddess Laxmi so that her blessings in the form of joy, prosperity, affluence, fertility, beauty, and enlightenment continuously be showered upon the devotees.
